The Godhead

One of the major differences between our doctrine and that of many Christian faiths is our belief in The Godhead as three distinct beings. We believe that Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and The Holy Ghost are three individual beings; united in purpose but as distinct as you and I. The best way I can think of it is like thinking about my parents. My Mom and Dad are totally unified in what they do. They make decisions together, they follow the same rules, they share the burdens of raising a family, but they are two individual people.
One of the best talks that has been given on this subject was by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland in October of 2007 (click here to read). He talks about the scriptural basis of this belief. Jesus Christ spoke of His Father on many occasions, and spoke of His Father as a separate being. One example of this is found in John 6:38 which reads, "For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me." Our Savior, Jesus Christ, followed everything that Heavenly Father asked Him to do. He paved the way for us to return to our Father in Heaven. He is unified with Heavenly Father on everything. Whom Do We Worship?

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we believe that God, the Eternal Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are three distinct personages. We call them the members of the Godhead. We revere all three but save true worship for God the Father. The amount of respect, awe, and appreciation that we give to the Savior may be termed to be worship, but as Bruce R. McConkie (a past leader of our church) taught, "worship in the true and saving sense is reserved for God the First, the Creator" (1982). We worship God in our temples, our churches, and our homes.
There are those who erroneously believe that we also worship Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith restored Christ's church and reorganized it in these latter days. We believe that he spoke with God the Father and Jesus Christ and was directed in how to organize this church. We honor him, revere him and are eternally grateful to him but we do not worship him.

John 17:3

A great verse that I love is in the Bible, in John 17:3. It says, "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." We are supposed to come to know God and Jesus Christ. I believe that it is possible to come to know them. It doesn't make sense that we cannot get to know them and have a relationship with them. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe that God the Eternal Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are three distinct beings. We believe that God and Jesus both have separate, perfect immortal bodies. God, is our Father, and we have the wonderful blessing of communicating with Him through prayer. Prayer is a great way that people can express their feelings of gratitude and can also ask for things that they need in their lives. I believe that God always answers our prayers in the best way for us. As we see Him answering our prayers, we can come to understand His love and concern for us. We can also see His power as He answers our prayers. The scriptures are also a wonderful resource to see how God has been involved in the lives of other people throughout history. God is so willing to help us, but we have to have faith in Him. I know that God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and is a God of love. I know that God is our Eternal Father and we are His children.
